Lithuania - the land of plains. The highest hill is 293 m above sea level. Relief in the southern, eastern and part western Lithuania is hilly with many lakes, The lowlands prevail in the central part and Nemunas River delta. There are about 4,000 lakes totally in Lithuania. The largest one is Druksiai Lake (area - 4,200 ha). Forests cover 30% of the territory. Dry pine forests predominate and continue along all southern-eastern part of Lithuania. Spruce forests predominate in western part. In central Lithuania, in theregion of lowlands, lay wet deciduous and mixed forests with spruce. The Oak, Ash, Black Alder, Birch, and Aspen predominate among deciduous forests. 20 years ago been intensive land reclamation made a lot of harm to Lithuanian wetlands. However still is left very valuable wetland complexes. The most valueable of them - Čepkeliai, Kamanos, Viešvilė and Nemunas Delta - are protected under the Ramsar convention.
