The Lithuania in the north borders on Latvia, in the east and southeast - on Byelorussia, in the southwest - on Poland and Russia (Kaliningrad district) and on the west on the Baltic Sea.

Total area of the country is over 65,000 sq. km with population of 3,2 million in habitants. The majority of the Lithuanian population makes their homes in the major cities: Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda, Siauliai, Panevezys.

Four ethnographic regions have been classified according to these features: Aukštaitija, Žemaitija, Dzūkija and Suvalkija - each having its own "capital city". Approximately 32% of the whole population is village dwellers. Even in such a little country as Lithuania there are noticeable differences in historical circumstances, the character of the residents, dialects, customs, songs and cooking.

The climate is transitive from marine to continental. Average summer temperature is about +23°C, winter -4°C. In coastal zone in summer time temperature few degrees lower, in winter few degrees higher comparing to continental part of country. Often there is snow and water bodies are frozen in winter time. The snow melting down in the fields usually started at the begining of March and in the forests a few weeks later.
